The SELEX simulation exercise is used by the federal government to evaluate experienced public service employees individually for promotion to the EX-1 level. It is an arduous, complex process based on advance analysis and understanding by the candidate of a sizeable fictitious organization, followed by what amounts to a day-long role-play entailing a series of simulated meetings that involve the candidate and several assessors.

In practice—or in their “real” job—government people actually do most things that SELEX tests. However, unfamiliarity with the hypothetical organization, the artificiality and pressure of the exercise, and uncertainty about what is being scrutinized and scored can unsettle candidates and impede their success on SELEX.

To address individual needs and improve performance significantly, our SELEX coaching provides: the dynamics and evaluation methods underlying SELEX, a proven way to breakdown voluminous corporate detail and deal with the multi-faceted simulations, tools to facilitate handling the managerial and interpersonal aspects of the exercise, and critical issues to watch for as well as pitfalls to avoid.

The personal SELEX coaching consists of a 6-hour face-to-face or telephone consultation, preceded by our review of your background and a discussion of your major concerns. A Study Kit tailored to help you excel accompanies the coaching.

Clients for our SELEX preparation coaching come from many different positions and departments in the federal government. They include longstanding, experienced managers or senior staff who are taking SELEX for the first time or doing a re-test.

All information about clients is kept confidential. Our success rate in helping individuals with the SELEX exercise is over 75%, much higher than the general pass rate which is approximately 20%.
