The In-Basket Exercise is a favoured test used by federal government departments and agencies in hiring and promotion competitions. Several variants exist, depending on the level and type of position sought. These include the 810 Managerial, 820 Middle Manager, 827 Career Assignment Program (CAP), and C101 Supervisory In-Basket tests. Candidates taking In-Basket tests usually are experienced individuals; however, most know little about how the complex, competitive process actually works, and are unable to find any government assistance about how to prepare.
