The In-Basket Exercise is a favoured test used by the federal government in hiring and promotion competitions. Several variants exist, depending on the level and type of position sought. Candidates taking In-Basket tests usually are experienced individuals; however, most know little about how the complex, competitive process actually works, and are unable to find any government assistance about how to prepare.

To address uncertainty and improve your performance, our In-Basket Coaching explains: the underlying dynamics and evaluation methods of the In-Basket Exercise, the background materials you will be given and how to digest them quickly, a strategy to analyze and respond effectively to each in-basket item you encounter, and pitfalls to avoid which slow you down and lower your score.

Personal Coaching Session

The 4-hour Personal Coaching Session comprises pre-work, where we tailor the materials and agenda to your particular In-Basket Exercise, and 3.5 hours of face-to-face or telephone meetings which cover every aspect of the process. You will receive:

• An orientation to the documentation and terms used in the In-Basket Exercise
• A breakdown of the test format, and the steps to follow to manage the 2-part process in an effective, timely manner
• Instructions on how to delimit your responsibilities in the hypothetical organization on which the exercise is based
• A strategic framework enabling you to analyze efficiently the numerous in-basket items, and to use the “competencies” (or skills and qualities) being tested to your advantage
• The “culture” and “values” informing the workplace in which the exercise is set
• Sample tools to familiarize you with the material and management processes involved in the real exercise
• A proven method to save time in preparing and explaining your actions for each in-basket item, and raise your score accordingly
